Calderwood to be named as new Kilmarnock boss

Calderwood to be named as new Kilmarnock boss

STV Sport understands that Jimmy Calderwood will be confirmed as the new boss of Kilmarnock until the end of the season at a press conference due to take place at Rugby Park at 5pm this evening.

STV Sport understands that Jimmy Calderwood will be confirmed as the new boss of Kilmarnock until the end of the season at a press conference due to take place at Rugby Park at 5pm this evening.

The ex-Aberdeen boss will succeed Jim Jeffries who agreed to leave the club by mutual consent on Monday after eight years in charge.

Calderwood claimed last night he had met Killie Chairman Michael Johnston and been offered the post for six months in bid to save the Ayrshire club from relegation.

But reports suggested Queen of the South boss Gordon Chisholm whose contract with Queens sends in May was still thought to be in the frame, with the club said to be frantically working on a compensation deal for the Doonhammers boss.

But in the end it appears Johnston has opted for Calderwood’s experience to ensure Killie’s SPL survival.

Veteran manager Tommy McLean and Scotland boss George Burley were also sounded out about the post, with Killie legend McLean not keen to take the charge on a short-term basis.

Calderwood has been out of work since being sacked by the Dons at the end of last season and will take trusted assistant Jimmy Nicholl with him to Rugby Park.

59-year-old Jeffries and his assistant Billy Brown left the Rugby Park club after relations between the manager and Kilmarnock Chairman Johnston reached breaking point when the chairman was forced to deny allegations he had sought to discuss Jeffries’ tactics with club captain Kevin Kyle.

Cash strapped Killie are just two points off the foot of the table, but bottom club Falkirk have a game in hand.

Brussow to be put to the Test

Brussow to be put to the Test

<a href=”http://worldcups.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/rugb.jpg”>rugb
No6 in after Spies injured

Flank Heinrich Brussow did not travel with the Springbok “dirt-trackers” to Leicester last night but instead stayed at home with the probable Test XV after a late injury to Pierre Spies.

The Bulls No8 withdrew from the tour to Britain, France, Italy and Ireland on Monday night because of a broken finger, paving the way for Brussow to return to the Test side.

Brussow’s initial inclusion in the team to meet Leicester at Welford Road on Friday was a clear indication that he would not start the first Test against France in Toulouse on November 13.

Coach Peter de Villiers was going to experiment with a back row comprising Spies at No8 and Ryan Kankowski and Schalk Burger on the flanks.

However, due to Spies’s injury, Kankowski will almost certainly play at No8, with Burger moving into the No7 jersey and Brussow reclaiming possession of the No6 shirt he had seemingly made his own this season.

Sharks flank Jean Deysel has been called up as cover for Spies and left with the squad for Leicester last night. Deysel will be on the bench against the English club champions. The Bulls’ Dewald Potgieter will occupy the openside flank role with Davon Raubenheimer playing on the blindside.

Brussow’s inclusion in the dirt-tracker side did raise some concerns about what he had done to deserve being dropped. Along with flyhalf Morne Steyn and scrumhalf Fourie du Preez, Brussow has been the best player in South Africa and, by extension, the world this year.

De Villiers clearly wants to experiment on tour, considering the large 37-man squad, but Brussow’s possible omission from the Test side seemed illogical.

It’s not an unusual situation for the 23-year-old Free Stater, though. Earlier this year he was left out of the initial squad to face the Lions, but produced a superb individual display for the Cheetahs against the tourists that forced De Villiers to pick him, after it became clear that Burger was struggling with an injury.

Brussow revelled in the first Test in Durban and earned the man-of-the-match award. He was dropped for the second Test as Burger returned to full fitness, but played a vital role in the final 20 minutes of the match to help the Boks to seal a famous series win.

Burger was banned for eight weeks following charges of eye-gouging and Brussow has been ever-present since. Even when Burger’s ban was over he was selected to the bench only, before a late injury saw him start in the unfamiliar No7 jersey against the All Blacks.

Brussow now has a chance, through Spies’s injury, to remind De Villiers why he should never have been dropped in the first place.

Habana’s last game for the Bulls

Habana’s last game for the Bulls

Currie Cup win would be fitting Loftus swan song

Springbok wing Bryan Habana will play his last game for the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld this weekend after being declared fit to meet the Free State Cheetahs in the Currie Cup final.

Habana’s increasingly fragile hamstrings threatened to keep him out of the match. He was substituted early in the second half of the Bulls‘ 21-19 semifinal win over his new team, Western Province.

But, after a week of rest, the flyer returned to training yesterday untroubled by his injury.

The news is a relief for the team and for Habana himself. He hasn’t won the Currie Cup in an illustrious career, and if he were to assist the Bulls in winning their 23rd title it would be a fitting swan song for one of Pretoria’s favourite sons.

Habana’s impressive CV includes winning the World Cup, two Super 14s and the Tri-Nations title, but the oldest trophy has eluded him. He missed the Bulls’ 2006 draw with Free State because of injury and was on the losing side in last year’s final against the Sharks.

Later this year, following the Springboks’ tour to France, Italy, Britain and Ireland, he will again turn out for the world-famous Barbarians, to add another accolade to his bulging credentials.

But for now his focus remains on setting one elusive record right.

“There are a couple of big things coming up in the next month and a half which I would really like to achieve, starting with a Currie Cup final at Loftus,” Habana told Rugby365.

The Bulls were further boosted by the news that Springbok hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle should be fit for the final. Bulls doctor Org Strauss declared the entire squad fit and ready for the game.

The Cheetahs also received a clean bill of health for those who played in the 23-21 semifinal victory over the Sharks.

However, they will be without Springbok flank Juan Smith, who hasn’t played in the Currie Cup this season after sustaining a knee injury in the Tri-Nations.

League: Ex-Kiwi on mental health watch after arrest

League: Ex-Kiwi on mental health watch after arrest

whatuira_300x200
Former Kiwis international and two-time National Rugby League premiership winner Paul Whatuira is in hospital in England pending a psychiatric assessment, after being held in connection with two assaults in Huddersfield.

English news media reported the 28-year-old was arrested early Tuesday morning (UK time) after allegedly being involved in a “bizarre sequence of events” which allegedly left two men with serious facial injuries.

Whatuira is contracted to the Huddersfield Giants in the English Super League.

The Huddersfield Daily Examiner reported the 16-test centre was restrained by police and taken into custody before being taken to a local hospital.

“Paul and his family have the full medical support of the club available to them at this difficult time,” said Huddersfield Giants managing director Richard Thewlis.

“I would ask that everyone respects the importance in this instance of confidentiality and understands that the club is upholding its duty of care to provide the best possible environment to help Paul.”

Whatuira, originally from Wainiuiomata, played for the Warriors, Melbourne Storm, Penrith Panthers and Wests Tigers in the Australian NRL.

He won premierships with Penrith in 2003 and the West Tigers two seasons later. He was also a member of the Kiwis triumphant Tri-Nations winning squad in 2005.

Whatuira joined Huddersfield in 2008 and has been a success since moving north, claiming a host of club awards as top try scorer, most metres gained and the coaches player of the year last season.

He played the last of his tests in 2007.

The Wallabies ended their worst losing streak in four years with a brilliant 21-6 win over South Africa in the Tri-Nations rugby Test in Brisbane last night.

Australia had three tries disallowed but scored two through James O’Connor and Adam Ashley-Cooper while the Springboks failed to cross the Wallabies’ line.

South Africa went into the match unbeaten and needing only a draw to clinch the Tri-Nations title.

South Africa beats Australia 32-25 to inch closer to Tri-Nations title

South Africa beats Australia 32-25 to inch closer to Tri-Nations title

PERTH, Australia – Winger Bryan Habana crossed twice as South Africa outclassed Australia in a 32-25 bonus-point victory Saturday which tightened its grip on the Tri-Nations title.

The unbeaten South Africans dominated the first hour and scored three unanswered tries in the first half, helped by a rash of handling errors from the Wallabies.

Scrum half Fourie de Preez took a quick penalty tap in the sixth minute, catching the Australian defence off guard as he scooted 15 metres to the try-line to start the scoring.

Australia Rugby

The Springboks led 22-3 before Australia fly half Matt Giteau reduced the margin to nine points with a penalty goal just before halftime and a converted try three minutes after.

But Habana secured the bonus point and sealed the result in the 54th minute when he crossed untouched following a well worked decoy play from a scrum for the Springboks’ fourth try.

The Australians scored two tries in the last five minutes, including Lachie Turner’s right on full time, to get within seven points and earn a bonus point.

Giteau ended with 20 points from two tries, two conversions and two penalties, but missed two penalty goal attempts and a quickly taken conversion.

The South Africans lead the Tri-Nations competition with 17 points from four wins, including two at home against the All Blacks and home-and-away wins over the Wallabies.

The All Blacks have eight points from two wins and Australia is out of contention with just three points from four losses.

That means the World Cup champion South Africans will win the Tri-Nations unless they lose their last two matches without picking up a bonus point and New Zealand has two bonus-point victories.

South Africa plays Australia at Brisbane next Saturday and New Zealand at Hamilton the following week.

Springboks coach Peter De Villiers was impressed with his lineup, which worked with a minority of possession, struggled in the scrum and conceded 15 penalties to just four from Australia.

“Look at the character they showed,” said De Villiers, who has 10 wins from his last 11 tests as coach. “A few calls didn’t go their way. We were at sixes and sevens in the scrums. They had the character to stand up as a team, and to play with the scraps that we got.”

The South Africans got plenty of chances to counterattack from a mistaken-ridden Wallabies lineup which allowed 21 turnovers and made 13 handling errors.

The Australians had the bulk of possession but had no penetration in attack in the first half and were punished by the offensive tackling from the more aggressive Springboks.

The Wallabies also lacked cohesion. Giteau was getting slow service from Luke Burgess from phase ball and set pieces and struggling for combination with inside centre Adam Ashley-Cooper, who was playing his third different position in three tests to cover for injured midfield regulars Stirling Mortlock and Berrick Barnes.

Their lack of combination led directly to South Africa’s second try, when centre Jaque Fourie strolled through a yawning midfield gap in the 10th minute and onto a short ball from Morne Steyn to touch down beside the posts and make it 10-0.

South Africa’s third try came directly from an Australian handling error in the 33rd minute, when winger Turner fumbled in an aerial contest for a high ball with Jean DeVilliers and Habana seized on the rebound with little defence to beat.

The Australians looked most dangerous when Quade Cooper went on at fly half and allowed Giteau to move one place wider to inside centre.

Giteau, who beat four defenders after a quick tap in the 43rd minute for his first try, earned a second in the 75th when he straightened the angle of attack after Cooper dragged three defenders across field and gave him an inside ball.

The Australians have now lost six straight Tri-Nations matches dating back to last August, putting extra pressure on coach Robbie Deans to make changes.

Deans said the Australians showed courage to come back.

“The boys showed at the death, we’re not far away. We’ll keep going,” he said. “The good thing is, I guess, they’re one score away.

“When you get into this context, it would be easy to take the soft option and go belly up. (But) there’s a lot of pride in this group. You’ll see that next week.”

Scores:

South Africa 32 (Bryan Habana 2, Fourie du Preez, Jaque Fourie tries; Morne Steyn three conversions, two penalties) def. Australia 25 (Matt Giteau 2, Lachie Turner tries; Giteau two penalties, two conversions). Half time: 22-6.

BOKS WALTZ THROUGH WAFER THIN WALLABIES

BOKS WALTZ THROUGH WAFER THIN WALLABIES

Skilled, talented, disciplined, focused, the list could probably go on and on. The powerhouses of world rugby are the Springboks. The green and gold juggernaut rolled on in front of a 49,000 capacity Newlands crowd yesterday. Under beautiful blue Cape Town skies, the Springboks were relentless in their quest for a third tri nations crown as they laid the Wallaby wardrobe bare.

Morne Steyn bokke
Showing once again why they are world champions, the Boks showed composure after going behind through a second minute converted Adam Ashley Cooper try.  Then, the Springbok pack went about their business. The battle hardened forward eight were bludgeoning upon the back of the Bok aerial bombardment approach.  Although Australia handled the high ball far better than the All Blacks the previous week, the Bok troops arrived in numbers to the breakdown.  Extreme pressure from Heinrich “GI Joe “Brussow and company led to a number of Wallaby turnovers, ill discipline and errors. The infringements did not go unnoticed and point machine Morne Steyn added another seven penalties and one drop goal to his ever growing point tally throughout this encounter. Titans Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha were colossal as they celebrated 50 appearances as a locking combination for the Boks. Knowledgeable rugby experts were wrong thinking that the Bok lineout would be challenged. The 8-0 lineout steals for the Boks more resembling a football score.
Starved of possession at the set phases and beaten on the floor the Australians resorted to foul play after foul play. The Wallabies did win this encounter though as they racked up three yellow cards to zero from the Boks. By half time they were down to 13 men as Richard Brown, for playing the ball from an off side position and Matt Giteau for a recklessly high challenge (deserves to be cited) on Fourie du Preez were given their marching orders. Later whinging Wallaby stand in Captain George Smith was told to waltz of for stupidity in the 79th minute.
The Wallabies did threaten later on with a dominant scrum (probably due to a fatigued Bok pack that have played 3 hard test in a row) and an excellent Matt Giteau solo try, but it would never be enough to challenge the Boks who had opened up a convincing lead by then.
The Boks professionally closed out the game.
Springboks victorious 29 – 17 .
One senses that the Springboks know where their strengths lie and they are implementing their game plan to perfection The Springboks have a well deserved three week rest before they embark on the away leg of the competition. The competition is theirs to botch. Surely now one away win will sew up the series. Their first away encounter is in “little Cape Town “ – Perth. The Boks have a good record here and the stadium is by no means a Wallaby fortress.
There are questions the Springboks may need to ask themselves before the trip though.
Do they replace the in form Heinrich Brussow with the returning Schalk Burger?
Should they experiment and give Ruan Pienaar the fly half berth and Morne Steyn a run at fullback?
How can they score more tries to get those elusive bonus points?
The Australians next meeting will be against the All Blacks in Sydney on the 22nd of August.
I have a sneaky suspicion that the Wallabies are going take that one.
Scoring :
SA : 29  Try : Matfield  Penalties Morne Steyn ( 7 ) Drop Goal : Morne Steyn ( 1 )
Aus : 17  Tries : Ashley Cooper , Giteau : Conversions Giteau   ( 2 ) Drop Goal : Barnes

Ricky’s Read : Wallabies to beat the All Blacks

Editors note: Ricky got the read 100% correct by predicting a bok win for this past weekend with the boks winning by 12 points
